For the construction of this medium-duty retaining wall, locally sourced basalt rock was utilized. The mortar was mixed by hand, adhering to the correct proportions of sand, cement, and lime to formulate a type S mix. To enhance the adhesion between the basalt stones, a slurry composed of cement and bonding adhesive was applied to the surfaces that would be joined. To ensure optimal curing of the mortar, a misting process was implemented over a five-day period, providing the necessary moisture for the material to set properly.
Situated two feet behind the basalt wall is a robust double or “solid” brick wall, which underwent repairs to address any loose bricks or compromised joints prior to the construction of the basalt structure. This careful preparation and attention to detail resulted in a visually appealing and functional landscape feature, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the client’s rental property along the driveway. The overall design not only serves a practical purpose but also contributes to the decorative elements of the surrounding environment.
